Pop Up National Gallery Tour
ArtTable members were led on a tour of the East Building modern art collection by member Jennifer Riddell, who works at the National Gallery of Art Education Department. She gave a tour adapted from a talk she gave recently.
When the East Wing of the National Gallery was opened in 1978 there were no women artists on view. Since then, staff have made great efforts to be more inclusive of women’s art in the collection. This tour focused specifically on women abstractionists, from Joan Mitchell to DC local Alma Thomas. Jennifer also highlighted pieces that had been in storage for years, such as a work by Mary Ann Corse on view for the first time since its acquisition in the late 1970s (pictured below).
