Our Conversation

  • Visitor engagement shift in museums: main goal of inviting the visitor to make meaning for themselves
    • Shift from model of k-12 education to the model of inclusive interpretation
    • This shift is part of a larger strategy, which is supported by the director of the museum
    • The new model means engaging other departments much earlier in the exhibition development process
  • Models include the TIME Program and the RISD Museum
  • Programming is now including a focus on public programs for adults
    • New ideas on this intention include engaging other Smithsonian thinkers as resources
  • Benchmarks of success: the importance of evaluation, whether visitors can articulate key aspects of an exhibition, and the establishment of an institution wide motivation to change and grow
