BreakfastTable with Nancy Sausser
Nancy Sausser, Exhibitions Director of McLean Project for the Arts (MPA), discussed the history and purpose of her organization with ArtTable members at an informal breakfast. Nancy shared that MPA is 56 years old, and has always been focused on its local community while serving a regional, mid-atlantic audience. MPA aims to give local and regional artists opportunities to share their work, while offering public programming which connects this art with local schools and teachers.
Partnerships, like the ones with artists and teachers, drive MPA. Nancy believes partnerships are the key to the organization's success. The strong community ties of MPA helped the organization recently when they had to find a temporary home, as their facility was being renovated. A local realtor offered an empty space, allowing MPA to continue to engage with their local community while experiencing the impact location makes.
Nancy also delved into her own curation process, emphasizing the importance of writing and collaboration. She believes that this collaborative element stems from her experience as an artist, as well as the curatorial freedom established by the founders of MPA.
