BreakfastTable with Philippa Hughes

BreakfastTable with Philippa Hughes

Philippa Hughes is a creative placemaker and cultural strategist who designs inventive and collaborative projects that strengthen communities, Connects people who would not normally meet in meaningful dialogue and opens portals to art and culture for the culturally curious. She speaks on the power of art to transform and connect.

Our Conversation:

  • Philippa’s experience carving a space in the D.C. arts community

    • Came to D.C. as a lawyer, and started to attend arts events. This led to the realization that she could be part of the art world.

    • By volunteering, Philippa began to meet artists and eventually started to blog.

    • Her original blog began as lists of art events, as Philippa saw that D.C. locals wanted to participate in the arts, but did not know how. The name - “pink line” - is a play on metro lines, as it seeks to connect all.

  • Current focus

    • Eventually, Philippa began to hold events in raw spaces. Philippa felt she was officially brought into the D.C. arts world when the Hirshhorn asked her to help plan an After Hours event.

    • Her focus then shifted to creative event creation, which Philippa calls social placemaking. She wants to focus on relationships, and try to learn how to get people talking.

    • One example of this planning is a recet Van Ness event, which stemmed from a grant from AARP. Philippa worked to bring seniors and millenials together in conversation at a temporary “Van Ness Social Club.”

    • She seeks to work with communities on these events rather than interjecting.
