BreakfastTable with Virginia Shore

"Cross-cultural exchange requires two-way engagement." - Virginia Shore

History of Art in Embassies

  • Virginia Shore’s history - began as an intern in 1991, within a team of 5 people, and built her way up
  • During the Bush + Clinton administrations - received funding from European Bureau, and worked with each country
    • beginning budget only covered insurance for the art and salaries of the staff
  • Began to branch out - working with museums and galleries
  • 2005 - began receiving a budget for every consulate
  • Scale has now evolved to larger artists (ex. Maya Lin, Jeff Koons)
  • Has survived political scrutiny due to the argument that the government should not spend money on art
  • Survived because art is a connector for these buildings - value in local staff of an embassy  realizing that their culture is being represented and acknowledged

Mission + Cultural Value of Art in Embassies

  • Beginning objective was to share American culture internationally
    • focus on artists who represent US culture
  • Branched out to focus on emerging artists, in addition to artists with broad appeal
  • Emphasis on working with artists with connections to the country
  • Value placed on art as the cultural aspect of Embassy buildings
  • Every artwork has an intention and connections
  • Recognizing that cross-cultural exchange requires two-way engagement
  • Always looking for new platforms for cultural exchange
    • bringing artists to the US to speak and to share their art
  • Statement now: art is a connector
